Girlie Saturday in Portland, Oregon

Posted on May 14, 2010 in Solo with Others | 0 comments

First full day of the 40th birthday getaway to the Pacific Northwest was devoted to exploring (and eating through) Portland, Ore. Thanks to TriMet’s MAX light rail system for FREE transportation (within certain zones) and saving my feet.

The morning started at Voodoo Doughnut (blog entry) and the day included a jaunt to find the 24-Hour Elvis Museum (blog entry).  The rest of the girlie Saturday in Portland went a little like this…

Portland Farmers Market: Culinary Heaven
The Portland Farmers Market moves throughout the Rose City during the week but we were told Saturdays at Portland State University is the best.

Stalking Elvis in the Pacific Northwest

Spotting Elvis in the Southeastern United States is understandable. Graceland is located in the heart of the South (Memphis). Up the road from me in Sarasota is the Waffle Stop diner (660 North Washington Blvd.; Tel: 941-952-0555) which claims Elvis ate there in 1956. Spotting a shrine to Elvis and other Elvis memorabilia in the Pacific Northwest during my recent trip seemed, well. Odd.

First up was the 24-Hour Church of Elvis in Portland, Ore.

“Do you know where the shrine to Elvis is?” I asked the P.F. Chang’s bartender.

Voodoo Doughnuts: Portland’s Magical Goodness

Voodoo Doughnuts, Portland, Oregon

Did I Name My Voodoo Doll Doughnut? Mwah!

Doughnuts, markets, good eats and weird stuff were themes for the first full day in Portland, Ore., during last month’s birthday trip to the Pacific Northwest. With a body still in sync with the Eastern Time Zone, waking up somewhat early was easy and began with a dash to world famous Voodoo Doughnuts , “Where Magic is in the Hole” (22 S.W. Third Ave.; Tel: 503-241-4704).

Open 24 hours, arriving around 8 a.m. on a Saturday was a good thing because when we walked passed around 1:30 later in the afternoon, there was a line to enter the little shop. The night prior we drove by around 9 p.m. and there was a longer line and no place to park.

Once inside Voodoo Doughnuts, I realized why the lines were long for the sugary-magical goodness. The interior is small. For some reason I was expecting the shop to be a bit bigger with a few tables to enjoy the delights (and people watch). Capacity is probably 10, and that’s if you like everyone.

Icelandic Volcano Changes My Travel Plans

Portland, Ore.

Portland, Ore.

Stupid Icelandic volcano! It’s official, 40th Birthday Trip to Amsterdam and Belgium is nixed for a trip to the Pacific Northwest. The airline hasn’t canceled the flight (yet) but things don’t look good. By canceling now we have time to plan for the new trip and if the flight to Amsterdam does depart, I’ll know someone who’s been trying to get home will enjoy a sweet first class trip home.
