Wordless Wednesday: Who Let the Bats Out?

Bats Heading Out into the Night from the University of Florida Bat House

Can’t wait to write a blog post about this experience! Florida continues to amaze me with incredible sights and adventures. A visit to the bat houses at the University of Florida in Gainesville last night was a true treat. Enjoy this video.

Register for The Great VISIT FLORIDA Beach Walk

The Great VISIT FLORIDA Beach Walk, Nov. 6, 2010

Last month I told you about The Great VISIT FLORIDA Beach Walk scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010. Probably the world’s largest beach rally, all 825 miles of the Sunshine State’s beaches will be walked and photographed the same morning to show the world how fantastic the beaches are. I’m happy to share more information…

Alegria Tacos is Good Eating Near Ft. Lauderdale

Exterior of Alegria Tacos

It’s no secret I’m a bit of a foodie. Yesterday I headed to Fort Lauderdale and with the help of technology, found a tasty and hospitable little taco joint called Alegria Tacos. My primary purpose to the east coast was to help out the roller derby league I belong by scorekeeping for their final bout…

Nov. 6 is Great VISIT FLORIDA Beach Walk

Siesta Key Public Beach, June 20, 2010

Not sure about you but I’m ready to put misconceptions about the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill’s impact (or lack of) on Florida’s beaches behind and move forward. In an effort to show the world the Sunshine State’s fantabulous beaches, the “Great VISIT FLORIDA Beach Walk” will happen Saturday, November 6, 2010, on Florida’s 825 miles…

Wordless Wednesday: Got Teeth?

Fossilized Shark

Family visited last week, my brother and his two kids from New York. It was a bit rainy due to Tropical Storm Bonnie heading our way (which later fizzled out) but they still enjoyed the great outdoors of Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands. Following a shallow water wading trip with the Charlotte Harbor Environmental…

Fantastical Blackrock Beach, Big Talbot Island SP

Driftwood at Blackrock Beach, Big Talbot Island State Park

So much to share about this weekend but little time. While it’s fresh on my mind, want to share my impressions about a place called Blackrock Beach (or Black Rock Beach, or beach at the end of Black Rock Trail or Dead Tree Beach) in Big Talbot Island State Park, Florida. It’s fantastical yet, eerie.

Siesta Key Public Beach, June 20, 2010

Guess what. There STILL is no oil on local beaches. This photograph was taken on Siesta Key Beach,  June 20, 2010. Enjoy!

2010 Scallop Season Opens Early in Florida

Scallops Collected in Citrus County, Fla.

You can’t call yourself a Floridian if you haven’t scalloped before. No, not “scalping” but the act of collecting scallops. This is one of the coolest – figuratively and literally – activities I have done and had the chance to do it last year in Citrus County, Fla. (You know, Homosassa Springs and Crystal River.)

Wordless Wednesday: Florida Beaches are Oil-Free

Englewood Beach, Florida, May 20, 2010

Media frenzy is causing quite a stir in Florida lately. Tourism is our livelihood and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is casting a dark cloud of negative attention over the Sunshine State. Vacationers are rethinking their vacation plans because of the “what if” scenario. “What if there is oil on the beach when I visit?”

Wordless Wednesday: Everglades Footprints

Everglades Footprints, March 2008

Having just finished a 4,000+ word essay on living in the Everglades to be considered for an antholgoy about living and working in national parks, I’m in a mellow, national park mood. Photo was taken at Eco Pond at Flamingo. Enjoy
