Ta-da! The World's Greatest Chicken Wing

Ta-da! The World’s Greatest Chicken Wing

Vinegar-based hot sauce, butter and a deep-fried, non-breaded wing are the elements of my ideal wing. When it comes to being the world’s greatest Buffalo chicken wing, can it be that simple? Being a Buffalonian, up until yesterday I thought I knew the answer but after watching “The Great Chicken Wing Hunt” screened at the Sarasota Film Festival, I realized what I had thought wasn’t quite right. After the big reveal, the winning wing decision upset me until I heard the reasoning.

Geena Davis Graced Red Carpet of 2011 Sarasota Film Festival, April 2011

Geena Davis Graced the Red Carpet of 2011 Sarasota Film Festival, April 2011

Have you heard about tween and teen girls posting YouTube videos and asking strangers whether they’re fat or ugly? Yeah, it’s disturbing. It’s the 21st century and we’re living in a society where girls (and women) are basing their self-worth on appearance. But why? Flip through magazines at the grocery store or turn on the television for part of the reason why.

Actress and Olympian Geena Davis is one of those people trying to make a difference in how girls and women view themselves. She founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media after viewing television programs and videos with her daughter and noticing an imbalance in the roles male and female characters play.

Geena Davis, Sarasota Film Festival, April 16, 2011

The 2011 Sarasota Film Festival has rolled in and out of town already and unlike the previous two years, I really wasn’t into it. Sure, I checked out the Through Women’s Eyes Shorts on April 9, primarily because of the documentary, “Derby Girls: Inside the Bradentucky Bombers” – my roller derby league. If you look close, you can see me in the background of some shots – dressed in NSO black.

Of the shorts, the one called “Colors and Boots“, filmed in Brazil, really stood out. It was in Portuguese with English subtitles and the star was adorable. Basically, Joana (played by Jhenyfer Lauren) had dreams of being part of a dance troupe from her fave television show. She has enthusiasm but the audition didn’t go according to plan. Uh, oh. I won’t give it away but it was cute and has a great message.

Actor and Director Vincent D'Onofrio, Sarasota Film Festival April 17, 2010OK, I’m not really a stalker but I did have a fun time playing amateur paparazzi on the red carpet of the 2010 Sarasota Film Festival last weekend. Check out this blog post with my observation about Patti Smith’s red carpet appearance.

A burning question many fans may want to know, does Mr. Vincent D’Onofrio wear boxers or briefs? Well…

Fashion at the 2010 Sarasota Film Festival, April 9

The 12th Annual Sarasota Film Festival kicked off tonight and I thought the red carpet was a little lackluster. Actor Kevin Kline, who stars in The Extra Man, which was the event’s opening night film, walked the carpet, arriving in a huge Rolls-Royce around 6:45 p.m., 15 minutes before the screening. Directors, Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini – the wife-and-husband team whose credits include American Splendor, walked the red carpet, too, but I didn’t catch a decent shot of the couple.
