Traveling stimulates all my senses with flavorful foods, cozy comforters, amazing vistas, city sounds, and delightful aromas. Although I spend several weeks on the road, incorporating little luxuries found on the road into my home extends my journey. A recent visit to Mount Dora, Fla., introduced me to a new indulgence for my home, Lampe Berger from La Petite Maison.

“Have you heard of Lampe Berger?” Charles “Scooter” Murray, owner of La Petite Maison asked. I knew he was saying something in French but didn’t quite comprehend exactly what.

“No, I haven’t,” I responded.

Ahhh….What’s the Scent?

Home scents are an integral part of home décor. When decorating we typically think of paint, flooring and drapes but scents are important, too, whether in the form of a seasonal candle, reed diffuser, incense or in a lovely bottle as Lampe Berger. Bringing home a scent I met on the road reminds me of that destination and experience well after the trip is over.

Lampe Berger Paris was founded in 1898 with a mission of improving indoor air quality, first in hospital rooms and today in any space needing purifying, whether it a home, office or musty hotel room. Unlike traditional candles and other air fresheners, Lampe Berger destroys odors, cleans the air and infuses a lovely scent. Having personally tried it in my home, I know it doesn’t mask odors or leave a heavy scent, it truly freshens the air.

How to Light and Use Your Lampe Berger

Disclosure: I’m not a certified Lame Berger user but I did follow the instructions without causing a pyrotechnic episode.

Scooter provided a demonstration on how to light the Lampe Berger with strict instructions NOT to light the wick. First, fill the bottle with Lampe Berger fragrance, insert the wick and rest the burner atop the bottle opening. Light the burner and let it burn for 2 minutes.

This is VERY important because the flame may be quite tall but resist the urge to extinguish it. First time I lit mine, I was a little scared and blew it out after about 30 seconds but realized that didn’t do the job.

After 2 minutes, blow out the flame and place the top on the burner and let it work its magic to clean and scent the air. When done, place the snuffer top to extinguish it. I’ve noticed it smells nice even when not lit.

La Petite Maison in Mount Dora is Scooter’s boutique and official Lampe Berger retailer. It’s also where my lamp and oil came from. Bottles come in beautiful colors and offer a variety of lovely scents from florals to spices. The scent I’ve been using is green tea and reminds me of my month in Japan. You can visit the shop in person or order Lampe Berger items on line including lamps, scent refills and accessories as the basic catalytic burner.
